Synopsis:
When a charismatic Spanish priest arrives in the Dominican Republic, he's warned against entering the sugar plantations where most of his parishioners live. Breaking a centuries old taboo, he ventures into the plantations and makes a shocking discovery: thousands of dispossessed Haitians tirelessly working the cane fields under backbreaking and inhumane conditions. Lacking both Haitian and Dominican citizenship, the laborers are virtually invisible under the eyes of the law and are frequently denied even the most basic human rights. Against a tide of violent protests instigated by powerful interests who profit from the plantations, the priest and sugarcane workers vow to change this system which counts the U.S. as its largest export market. Director's Bio:
