South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Conference & Festival - An Up Close And Personal Opportunity
Austin, Texas — February 28, 2007 — The 21st edition of the South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Conference and Festival, one of the most highly anticipated music industry events of the year, takes place Wednesday, March 14 through Sunday, March 18, 2007 in Austin, Texas. SXSW and its participants share innovative ideas, attend informative panel discussions, network at an expansive trade show, hear every genre of music, and enjoy unfettered access to industry professionals. Despite pervasive technology that can be used for access to almost any person, product or idea accessible to us at our fingertips, it is still resoundingly evident that it has never been more important for industry professionals to meet face to face. Austin Texas in the Springtime is the perfect place for that to happen.
SXSW 2007 Major Sponsors provide critical support for the event and include Miller Lite, Verizon, Yaris, Blender Magazine, IFC: the Independent Film Channel and founding sponsor the Austin Chronicle. Local electronic media sponsors include KLBJ-FM, KGSR, and 101X.
SXSW announced in January 2007 that it had achieved the offsetting of 100% of its carbon emissions from SXSW business activities in 2006. SXSW will be working with Ecology Action of Austin to recycle all waste from outdoor parties and events and will use biodiesel in generators and production trucks. SXSW has offset 100% of 250 metric tons of carbon emissions by purchasing 376 MW of Texas wind energy carbon credits from Green Mountain Energy Company and has given a donation to the Austin Parks Department for the purchase and maintenance of native trees. SXSW is now a Carbon Neutral company and has pledged to reduce carbon emissions and invest in carbon offsets. The 2007 SXSW Music Conference held at the Austin Convention Center will feature over 70 panel discussions, interviews, demo listening sessions and the SXSW mentor program. The daytime program of educational, informative and entertaining presentations is a core component of the event which covers business and creative issues in music. Highlights will include: Peter Townshend's Keynote Interview on Wednesday, March 14 at 6:30 pm in the Hilton Grand Ballroom (next door to the convention center); SXSW Interviews featuring Gilberto Gil on Wednesday, March 14; Emmylou Harris and Terry McBride on Thursday, March 15; and Ricki Lee Jones, Booker T Jones, Joe Boyd and Iggy Pop on Friday, March 16. Panels include: 'Say It Loud, I'm WHAT? and I'm Proud'; 'Record Companies: Who Needs Them?'; 'Latin Music In a Fragmented Marketplace'; 'China's Emerging Music Market'; 'Re-inventing Payment Models for Digital Music'; 'Greening the Music Industry'; and 'Idiots Unite!'. Wednesday's Crash Courses and Music Biz 101 panels offer basic information at workshops and special panels which cover topics of interest to working musicians and aspiring music professionals alike. Rounding out the conference are Demo Listening sessions that offer registrants a chance to see how music is reviewed and reacted to by representatives from labels, venues, radio and the press and the Mentor Program that offers registrants ten minute meetings with panelists and industry pros. For a complete list of panel topics, descriptions and speakers, access the SXSW website at www.sxsw.com.
The SXSW Trade Show Exhibition, also in the convention center will host an array of events and exhibitors. The three day music trade show continues to offer a unique opportunity for the performing bands and thousands of other industry professionals to meet in one-on-one scenarios and exchange information. Participating organizations from around the world including Canada, Finland, France, Ireland, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, UK, and from every corner of the United States will be on hand to aid in broadening careers for both American and international bands and companies. The Indie Village presented by NAIL, with participation from independent labels and their artists, provides a great space for indie labels to do business and meet artists, media and fans. StudioSX, sponsored by ME Television, is where high profile music industry professionals will be interviewed in front of an audience on the trade show floor. Additionally, anyone needing to transact business while at the convention center, can go to the Sonicbids E-mail/Web Center and wireless lounge. To prepare for the evening ahead there are two excellent opportunities to sample the nighttime offerings - The SESAC Music Day Stage Cafe and the KOSS Festival Preview Station. The SESAC Day Stage Café runs Wednesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. It will feature acoustic sets from bands that will be playing at the nighttime music festival. The KOSS Festival Preview Station features MP3's from showcasing artists. An attraction for all performing bands is Thayers Showcasing Artist Lounge - a great place for artists to chill out and check out natural vocal care. And finally, the South by Bookstore sponsored by Barnes & Noble Booksellers will feature notable SXSW registrants selling and signing books. A complete list of Exhibition participants with full web pages and direct links to each company is available at www.sxsw.com/music/tradeshow. SXSW GOES CARBON NEUTRAL
Austin, Texas - January 17, 2007 - South by Southwest Music, Film & Interactive Conferences (SXSW) in Austin, Texas has announced that it is partnering with Green Mountain Energy Company, an Austin-based renewable energy market leader, to offset 100% of carbon emissions arising from SXSW business activities. SXSW is now a Carbon Neutral company and intends to reduce carbon emissions where it can and purchase carbon offsets where it cannot.
SXSW has offset 100% of 250 metric tons of carbon emissions by purchasing 376MW of Texas wind energy carbon credits from Green Mountain Energy Company. In addition, the company has given a $5000 donation to the Austin Parks Department for the purchase and maintenance of native trees.
“Once we set the goal for SXSW to achieve carbon neutral status, our staff took a very active hand in gathering all the pertinent information about our activities which generate carbon emissions,” said Managing Director Roland Swenson. “An important lesson we learned was that any business can achieve this goal with some work and a willingness to invest in new activity. While the amount of carbon emissions generated by SXSW alone is relatively small, if every business took similar steps, it would make a profound difference to our planet’s future.”
“SXSW recognizes that environmental issues are now an important measuring stick that distinguish one event from another and one company from another,” noted Una Johnston, SXSW’s UK & Ireland Manager and now its Environmental Consultant. She used the standards, guidelines and tools contained in the World Resources Institute’s GHG Protocol to calculate the carbon emissions for the year September 1, 2005 to August 31, 2006. SXSW agreed that this 12-month period would be designated as the baseline year in order to use it as the benchmark against which future reductions in carbon emissions can be measured.
“This base line analysis was much easier to do than I had anticipated,” said Operating Director Eve McArthur. “We had great cooperation in data collection from the City of Austin, the Convention Center and Austin Energy. SXSW wants to take responsibility for its own carbon emissions first and to work for positive change on the environment among all of our stakeholders. The increased awareness has already resulted in our staff making steps to reduce their own emissions.”
Johnston calculated that SXSW carbon emissions arise from gas and electricity usage in its offices (18%), from electricity usage in the Austin Convention Center and all the showcase, movie and party venues that it contracts with during SXSW each year (55%), and also from business travel (27%).
“It’s important to say that SXSW is not simply offsetting its carbon emissions,” explained Johnston, “we are preparing an emission reduction strategy for the next four years as part of an environmental policy initiative. Roland and Eve have already taken steps to reduce our footprint by replacing the inefficient heating and cooling system in the office and adding insulation to the building. When SXSW takes place in March, the Festival will be working with Ecology Action of Austin to recycle all waste from our outdoor parties and events and will use biodiesel in generators and production trucks."
"Climate change is a global challenge with serious consequences for our social and economic infrastructure as well as the natural environment. However we all realize that long-term solutions require emission reduction efforts by the entire economy,” continued Johnston.

USA Emissions
o In 2002, the USA & Canada together represented the world’s largest economic unit, but also the most energy and carbon intensive on a per capita basis. This means that the US faces a dual challenge as significant reductions in both energy intensity and carbon intensity will be required in a carbon-constrained future.
o The total carbon dioxide emissions per head for the USA in 2002 was 19.7 tons. This compares with 8.9 tons per head for the UK, and 8.4 for the EU-15. The world’s CO2 emissions per head in 2002 were 3.9 tons. (International Energy Agency)
o There is an estimated 380 pm of CO2 in the atmosphere compared with 280ppm a hundred years ago. This level is currently increasing at the rate of 20pmm every decade, which means that if these trends continue, by 2025 the ppm of CO2 will pass the 400ppm threshold above which many scientists believe that climate change is irreversible.
Impacts of Climate Change
o Negative economic impacts – the global insurance industry has lost billions in recent years as a result of extreme weather.
o Depletion of Natural Resources – for some ecosystems like coral reefs, the combined effects of climate change and other stresses are likely to bring wide scale irreversible impacts.
o Flooding – A rise in sea level from climate change will threaten buildings, roads and other infrastructure in vulnerable places (e.g. in Florida and Alaska).
o Disease – Climate change could increase the prevalence of some infectious diseases if warmer weather allows these insects to travel further north.
o Water Shortages – Climate change will cause further water shortages in regions where summer water supplies are dependent on winter snowfall.
o Habitat Destruction – Some major mammals (whales, polar bears) may be seriously threatened by reductions of sea ice from warming over next century.
o Glacial Melting – Experts predict that under current rates of warming, all the glaciers in Montana’s Glacier National Park will melt by 2030.

Austin, Texas - January 2, 2007 - The South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Conference and Festival, scheduled to take place March 14 - 18, 2007 in Austin, Texas, is pleased to announce interviews with Gilberto Gil, Emmylou Harris, David Byrne, Terry McBride, Ricki Lee Jones, Booker T and Joe Boyd. These sessions join the previously announced keynote by Pete Townshend.
SXSW Interview: Gilberto Gil. Mr. Gil was born in Bahia, Brazil in 1942. In the 1960s, with fellow musician Caetano Veloso, he led the musical and political movement Tropicalia, Brazil's most significant cultural movement since bossa nova. Gil was exiled to England in 1969 by Brazil's military dictatorship and there he absorbed diverse elements of international pop culture which he translated to his own music. He has recorded 52 albums, including a tribute to Bob Marley titled 'Kaya na Gandaya' which was released in 2002. For the last four years, Gil has served as Brazil's Minister of Culture. "Once I was the stone-thrower," he says, referring to his opposition to the dictatorship whose power came to an end in 1980s, "now I am the glass." Gil's new album 'Gil Luminoso' will be released in the US in March, 2007, in conjunction with a US tour.
SXSW Interview: Emmylou Harris. Ms. Harris' voice and performances are always memorable, from the incomparable harmonies on Gram Parsons' albums through her notable Warners records of the 70s and 80s to her recent genre-defying records such as 'Wrecking Ball' and 'Stumble Into Grace.' Her most recent collaboration with Mark Knopfler, 'All The Roadrunning' garnered a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album. Rhino will release a five-disc box of rarities, "Songbird," in Spring of 2007. The SXSW Interview will include special acoustic performances and recollections from a singular life in music.
SXSW Interview: David Byrne. Mr. Byrne returns to SXSW in 2007 with a special presentation. "Record Labels: Who Needs Them?" examines the current state of affairs among purveyors of recorded music. From his unique perspective as artist, label owner and musical enthusiast, Byrne will discuss the options available to artists in an age where retail and radio infrastructure is shrinking, and digital technology has changed how music is recorded, distributed and promoted. Mr. Byrne's manager, David Whitehead, will also speak and facilitate the session.
SXSW Interview: Terry McBride, CEO/Co-Founder of Nettwerk. Mr. McBride's unique approach to the music business in the digital age has garnered much attention recently. McBride has guided the careers of artists like Sarah McLachlan, Barenaked Ladies and Avril Lavigne. McBride and Nettwerk are innovators tailoring distinctive campaigns incorporating digital and traditional approaches.
SXSW Interview: Ricki Lee Jones. Ms. Jones is among the most acclaimed and talented singer-songwriters of her generation. From her stunning debut in 1979 through her current recordings and concerts, she has created music with a wide range of influences and her singular voice. In advance of her first album for New West Records, Ms Jones will sit down for an interview to discuss her work.
SXSW Interview: Booker T. Booker is perhaps best known for the million-selling instrumental, "Green Onions," recorded by Booker T and the MGs. He has recorded with a who's who of artists, including Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan and Barbara Streisand. He produced Willie Nelson's "Stardust." He's performed with Neil Young, Eric Clapton and George Harrison. Booker will be recording this fall and winter for the first time since 1994, with tours to follow.
SXSW Interview: Joe Boyd. Mr. Boyd's life in music includes a remarkable number of "right place at the right time" moments. Boyd founded Hannibal Records, bringing the Fairport Convention, Maria Muldaur, Nick Drake, and Richard and Linda Thompson to audiences worldwide. Boyd's new book "White Bicycles - Making Music in the 1960s" recounts his journey.
