The Great Spy Experiment
Barely a year after making their first-ever public appearance at a gritty, little dive-bar in Singapore, The Great Spy Experiment are quickly establishing themselves as one of the country's hottest and most exciting bands.
Drawing influences from musicians as diverse as Ash, Explosions in the Sky, The Killers, Underworld, Franz Ferdinand, Mansun, Sigur Ros, Metallica, Radiohead, Kent, Mogwai, Force Vomit, Supergrass, Muse and Interpol, The Great Spy Experiments music can only be described as a champagne-fueled orgy of powerpop, indie, rock and dance, informed by everything except J-Lo. The lyrics are just as varied from Dance With Mes attempt at political infamy and Flower Show Riots witty commentary on the excesses of the rich, to Captain Funkycurls nonchalant take on the notoriously decadent lifestyle of flight personnel and Miss Kensingtons parody on the typical male love-lust confusion they are as frank as they are astute, blas as they are evocative. The band is working on their debut full-length release Flower Show Riots and the first single off the album, Captain Funkycurls/Class A Love Affair, was released on 23 January 2006. The single, featuring two songs off the album and a demo version of the album title track, has received great support from various local radio stations with interviews and airplay on Power98 FM, Perfect Ten (98.7FM) and News Radio (93.8FM). In fact, two days after making its radio debut on the nightly primetime Cool Club Clan programme on Power98, Captain Funkycurls was voted into its top ten chart by its listeners and stayed in the charts for almost a month. Their cult hit, 'Class 'A' Love Affair' was a recommended download in the nation's leading paper, a rarity in a list that is dominated by foreign musicians. The bands high-energy live sets are not to be missed, and having rocked various venues and high-profile events throughout the country, they are more than ready to cause a stir a little further from home. ***************************************************************************** 24 October 2006: The band was nominated in the Music category for the 'Singapore Street Style Awards', as well as in the Favourite Breakout Band and Favourite Local Song categories for the 'Power98 FM Singapore Music Awards'. ***************************************************************************** 29 October 2006: The Great Spy Experiment win Favourite Breakout Band in the 'Power98 Singapore Music Awards'. The award, decided by public voting, is an extraordinary achievement for the band, as they're the only band among the nominees yet to release an album, with the award coming on the back of two singles that have received regular airplay as well as electrifying live performances. |
