Adam Carroll

Adam Carroll is a Texas-born and raised songwriter. His debut CD for Blue Corn Music, "Far Away Blues," was produced by Lloyd Maines.
ADAM CARROLL joins the short list of down-home storytellers taking events of ordinary lives and turning them into deeply moving, often humorous songs. "FAR AWAY BLUES" is tellingly introspective with the signature melodic invention and commanding poetic voice that earned "SOUTH OF TOWN" and "LOOKIN' OUT THE SCREEN DOOR" nationwide rave reviews and considerable airplay. ADAM CARROLL is already a major artist in Texas; "FAR AWAY BLUES" is taking that buzz across America, Canada and to Europe. As with CARROLL's other studio albums produced by LLOYD MAINES, "FAR AWAY BLUES" projects the warmth of a living room get together, down to the brief spoken introductions Carroll gives to each song. CARROLL cut most of the basic tracks - Guitar, Harmonica, and Vocals - in one take, aiming for a live concert feel. RAY WYLIE HUBBARD makes a guest appearance by on "LAST DAY OF GRACE" a tune he co-wrote with CARROLL. TERRI HENDRIX provides backing vocals. RAY DAVIDSON, Carroll's grandfather plays sax and LLOYD MAINES, pedal steel. RICHARD BOWDEN adds fiddles and cello. "FAR AWAY BLUES" nudges CARROLL's sound in new directions, but the focus remains on his songwriting and warm, easygoing vocals. Even when dealing with heartache and hardship, CARROLL's basic goodness and generosity of spirit comes shining though. "FAR AWAY BLUES" is an album that will grow on you, revealing new levels of insight and musicianship with every listen. Robert Earl Keen: "I'm not a music maven, so I can't really say who's good and who's bad. I know a few people that I think are underrated. There's a guy named Adam Carroll that I've known for two or three years, and he writes some really clever, almost John Prine-like songs, and then he writes some just beautiful (descriptions) of things that happen in Texas." www.charleston.net Linda Ray, No Depression Magazine "Adam Carroll might be peddling short stories to the New Yorker today had he not fallen into a rock n' roll fantasy, namely the notion that he could get girls with a guitar. He's not saying if it worked, but literature's loss is music's gain. Carroll's keen observations of the commonplace yield characters as familiar as the next cab driver, or the guy slinging suds in the coffee shop kitchen. With marvelous economy, the former student of poetry and creative writing imparts a vital sense of character and motivation, like, say, Faulkner or Steinbeck, or, for that matter, Guy Clark." Review at www.cdbaby.com "Far Away Blues", Adam Carroll's third studio album, showcases the idiosyncratic songwriting style that has endeared Adam to fans and critics alike and has earned him comparisons to folks like John Prine, Todd Snider and Townes Van Zandt. Lloyd Maines' production retains the intimacy of Adam's previous albums while filling the sound out significantly Ray Wylie Hubbard lends his pen and voice to the cause by co-writing and singing on "Last Day of Grace". Find out what folks in Texas have been learning for the last few years-Adam Carroll is the real deal! Michael Corcoran Austin American Statesman "Carroll looks to be the latest great Texas songwriter to graduate from Townes Van Zandt State...John Prine with a big dose of Butch Hancock." Review from www.buzzflash.com If all the songs on Adam Carroll's Far Away Blues had no vocals, I would still love them to pieces. But what lyrics! Carroll proves that there's something about being based in Austin these days that brings out the best in singer-songwriters. The spirited "Alright" kicks off Far Away Blues (Carroll's fourth album) with an assortment of barroom benedictions, and back alley admonitions: "If you're gonna let your deal go down, say alright/The girls in the dance hall late at night say alright/Sailors stumbling for a fight say alright/ Whispering secrets in the night they say alright." The wailing harmonica shows that Carroll is steeped in the folk troubadour tradition. The song is sort of a three minute and four second long pat on the back to people who may not even know they need one. Carroll's gentle philosophy surfaces in last verse with these kind words: "Spotlight shining in the woods alright/Just tell them you did the best you could/ And that's alright." www.buzzflash.com/jukebox/06/01/blu06001.html |
