RUBICKS
ALBUM: IN MINIATURE Rubicks release their debut album In Miniature on 14 August 2006 Fronted by Vanessa Redd (guitars, vocals) and Marc Makarov (bass, electronics), this band with a taste for Aphex-styled electronics, bubblegum melodies and Kevin Shields-inspired guitars made an instant impact with their first release, 'I See You' , which the NME described 'I See You' as Too good for the Singles Pages. . . 9 out of 10. Vice Magazine summed up 'I See You' as brilliant and highly addictive, while The Fly instantly made the band one of the magazines Ones To Watch. Rubicks have already appeared on several underground indie compilations including Rough Trade Counterculture (the NME review voted Rubicks as the best act on there) and Modular DJ's Leave Them All Behind, alongside the likes of Tom Vek and The Rakes. Their August single 'Midas' is already something of a cult classic as an earlier version of the song came out on a limited 7 inch a couple of years ago. The original version provoked the NME to wax lyrical about its killer chorus which they reckoned would storm the singles chart - except only a few copies were ever made! XFMs John Kennedy also picked up on it, becoming one of the earliest champions of the band. 'Midas' and 'I See You' were both mixed by Alan Moulder (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Killers) and is one of 12 tracks on In Miniature. Other highlights on the album include the upbeat 'Wish You Were' which is full of analogue synthesizers and crash-landing percussion, while 'Just For You' reveals a completely different approach in its fragile, shimmering production. At their most inventive, Vanessa Redd's vocals echo Bjork's sensuality, the dream-like My Bloody Valentine, Siouxsie's full-on schizo voodoo and even Air's space-muzak (with a nod to 10CC) when they're stacked up and fed through machines on tracks such as the epic 'Move Away', 'Disconnected' and string-led 'All You Ever'; Makarov's bass-lines give the songs a fresh, melodic edge throughout and while never losing focus, Rubicks stretch themselves from the two-minute automaton punk of 'Actress/Model' to 'Popmobility's sinister-psychedelia-meets-60's pop - on the surface appealing but there's definitely something weird and disorienting going on. Following support slots with The Duke Spirit, Clor and The Bravery, Rubicks are due to support White Rose Movement in December. |
