American Princes
The formative years of American Princes read like a page from a masochist's diary: abandon New York for Arkansas (in a truck that breaks down along the way). Write first record in an unheated shack on a sod farm. After record is released, travel across the country over and over again in a conversion van that smells, increasingly, like something out of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. Toil at day jobs. Write another record. Repeat.
Somewhere along the way, things changed. A freak series of events led to AP's 2004 album, Little Spaces, being played in a car that Yep Roc boss Glenn Dicker was riding in. Dicker was compelled enough to write the band who, in turn, were compelled enough to head straight to North Carolina to play a show for the label. Yep Roc re-released Little Spaces and American Princes hit the road again, but not before recording their latest album, Less and Less, with producer Alan Weatherhead (Lucero, Sparklehorse, Hotel Lights). 2006 saw the release of Less and Less to immense critical acclaim. The album made multiple year end lists, including Magnet, The Onion, and Blogcritics. Over the course of the year, the band toured relentlessly, sharing the stage with groups including the Roots, the Flaming Lips, Big Star, Lucero, De La Soul, Son Volt, Soul Asylum, Mudhoney, and the Hold Steady. 2007 looks bright for American Princes. The band has been recording with producer Chuck Brody (Wu Tang, Beastie Boys, Northern State), and is working on material for a new album. You can catch them on tour this Spring with Lucero and Catfish Haven, or on tour throughout the Summer and Fall. If you're an old fan or a new convert this is going to be a great year. You can catch American Princes Thursday, March 15th at The Continental Club at 8 pm, or on Friday, March 16th at the Yep Roc party at Habana's (free all afternoon). American Princes Are: Will Boyd (Lead Guitar, Multi-Instrumentalist) Luke Hunsicker (Bass) Collins Kilgore (Lead Guitar, Vocals) Matt Quin (Drums) David Slade (Rhythm Guitar, Vocals) |
