Bone Box
Bone-box can be one person or 12 or any number in between. It's a heady mix of country, blues, jazz and experimental styles but crucially with damn fine tunes. There are lush strings, mariachi horns and beautiful pedal steel guitar. Bone-box is at times painstakingly intricate and at others primal and gut-wrenching.
The new album, "Death of a Prize Fighter," is a twelve-chapter piece for anyone who likes their tumbler full but their jokes baleful. It touches on lost love and lost friends, on all our inner-monkey fistfights and stubborn old trees. It salutes proud-as-punch sticks-in-the-mud, single-minded down-and-outs and all kinds of spirits. You'll get a wry glimpse of why the devil really is in the detail and a lesson in how to talk yourself right out of existence. You’ll hear an empathetic but sardonic roar to all hell-raisers everywhere and you may even find an appointment card that drags you through foul Mancunian weather to St. Jay’s Infirmary. "An exceptionally accomplished work of heart" - MOJO "Few albums set out their world as confidently as Manchester's Bone-box" - The Times "Bone-Box weave webs of faded fairy tales and cross palms with slivers of shattered tales of the everyday thrown from an out of control carousel...a ghostly gospel of drama and dented dreams far more feral than the plaintive lap-steel sometimes suggests. As an epic whole, they are 'The Master and Margharita' filmed by Glenn Ford and scripted by Tom Waits with executive producer Leonard Cohen" - BBC.CO.UK "There are plaintive pianos, a twilight cast of characters and sardonic poetry to the lyrics...An intelligent, genre-busting, dark masterpiece" - MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS "If you are really looking for a revival in British guitar music, Manchester's Bone-box may be the combination you have been dreaming of. Bona-fide brilliant" - NME "Superb. A dark yet hugely rewarding experience and roots rock at it's best. A stunning yet totally subtle work of understated genius" - BIG ISSUE LP OF THE YEAR "A beguiling musical tapestry...there really aren't any bones to pick with a record as fulfilling as this. Bone-box are definitely out there on their own" - KERRANG "Damn Fine" - TIME OUT "Jay Taylor could easily be Tom Wait's errant sibling" - UNCUT "Lyrics that sometimes sound like Milton...a sound that somehow transplants Manchester to a plain near Tucson" - Q |
