The Wombats - Moving to New York
Download   |   Stream
The WOMBATS are a three-piece band from Liverpool whose own brand of shimmering, dance fuelled indie disco pop has grabbed many an ear and tapping toe of late.

Born in the bustle of the local music scene just two years ago, they comprise two native Liverpudlians: front man Matthew Murphy, provider of voice/guitar/keyboards and drummer/backing-vocalist Dan Haggis. Scuzzy basslines and additional ammo are provided by Tord Overland-Knudsen, a Viking who has made his home in the city.

Having already seduced Scouseland, The Wombats have recently been getting attention in more some exotic locations - from China to Canada, via France and Germany, where their sad-spun, harmonic rush has touched a universal nerve despite its peculiarly English lyrical concerns of Caravans in Wales and the NHS.

The Wombats have made a home at London based indie, KIDS, where they snuggle alongside releases from the likes of iLiKETRAiNS, The Whip, Assembly Now and Paul Hartnoll (ex-Orbital) – their debut single ‘Lost in the Post’ sold out in 3 days upon release in July 2006, and their follow-up single ‘Moving to New York’ shaved a day off that, flying off the shelves into the grateful arms of pop fans and indie kids alike in November 2006. In addition, they penned the classic-in-waiting ‘Is This Christmas?’ for the KIDS indie Christmas album, which drew acclaim from Time Out, NME and Record of the Day amongst others.

Their next single, the equally glorious ‘Backfire at the Disco’ has recently been recorded with Jimmy Robertson (Klaxons/Simian Mobile Disco) in the producer’s chair and Steve Harris (Kaiser Chiefs/The Automatic) in the mixing booth. This will be released in late March 2007 on KIDS.

The band have received much praise from those in the know, they have been described variously as:

"Hottest Record in the World" - Zane Lowe (Radio 1)

"More tunes than a pharmacists counter" (NME Radar)

"A joy to behold" (Gigwise.com, UK)

"A must-see next time they're in town as they begin the fast-track to rock 'n' roll superstardom" (Chart Magazine, Canada)

"A silver Greyhound bus lost amongst the roundabouts of a unloved English new town" (The Fly, UK)

The Guardian said of their appearance at Beijings Midi Festival : "For one glorious half-hour concert at least - bigger than the Rolling Stones." and finally the wombats have been described as 'a bunch of fresh humous howels' -(the humous gazette)

No such nonsense for The WOMBATS themselves, who describe their output more sensibly as: Joebone fiace smoking da webosses and manhandling a few near-extinct Venezuelan toddle otters Of course

Colin Murray (Radio 1) said of their recent single Moving to New York that "It has been burning a hole in my desk all week." This is not to mention The WOMBATS recent success on Zane Lowes Radio 1 show winning his Fresh Meat competition.

Other radio success has included two singles making XFMs play list, a live session for Huw Stephens' Radio 1 show from Maida Vale to be aired October 25th 2006 12pm GMT and plays on Colin Murray and Rob da Banks Radio 1 shows.

Their music is already starting to catch on overseas with plays on Norwegian Radio, Indie 103.1 in LA and various Canadian stations, following their success at Canadian Music Week.

The band also won A n R Worldwides Unsigned Artist of the week.
