Hank IV
Not to be confused with the well-known series of similarly monikered Hank Williams offspring, HANK IV is primitive bombastic rock combo from San Francisco trafficking an ill-advised mix of dual-guitar histrionics, panic-skiffle drum beats, craw-stick melodics and straw-boss vocal gymnastics.
Over the past year, HANK IV have built a reputation as one of the Bay Area's most hard-rockin, unpredictable, dance-worthy, snappy & wry live acts, winning over both twenty-something Mission District sceneutantes and grizzled music industry (ahem) veterans in a series of memorable shows with Country Teasers, Mr. Quintron, Blowfly, Times New Viking, Battleship and others. Despite the odds, these aged and well-bred gentlemen of taste and leisure have delivered a real thinking, drinking person's rock record. HANK IV's debut LP/CD, "Third Person Shooter," was released in October 2006 by Oakland label Hook or Crook Records and promptly debuted at #1 on KUSF 90.3FM where it has remained on their chart for two solid months. Recorded by Eli Crews (Erase Errata, XBXRX, Total Shutdown) in Oakland at New Improved Recording and mixed by Tim Green (The Fucking Champs) at Louder in San Francisco, Hank IV's "Third Person Shooter" has become of 2006's most bafflingly beloved releases. In November 2006, Hank IV opened for Mudhoney at the Knitting Factory in New York and made their second live appearance on WFMU, this time performing on Terre T's Cherry Blossom Clinic. The band is now recording a 7" for Plastic Idol Records to be released in March 2007. Hank IV includes former members of Icky Boyfriends, Leather Uppers, The Roofies, Resineators, El Camino Cha-Cha Orchestra, and Bum Kon, with releases on labels such as Siltbreeze, Menlo Park Recordings, Goner, Sympathy for the Record Industry. "Incredibly brainy, powerful and genuine twin-guitar punk rock played by folks who have seen, done and snorted it all. 'Third Person Shooter' is one of the year’s top punk albums, offering up a powerful take on Rock’N’Roll with million dollar smarts and a drug-addled, spiteful 70s punk mood, minus all the smirks and fashionable clichés." - Mitch Cardwell, Maximum Rocknroll "What teacher's lounge did these guys meet in? These over 35s knocked out some great Crime meets Chain Gang meets Viletones meets Styrenes punk rock that hearkens back to the dark grunt of late 70s Frisco punk, while remaining fresh." - Scott Soriano, Terminal Boredom RIYL: Volcano Suns, Country Teasers, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, The Fall, Crime, and HBO’s The Wire. |
