Buttercup
This San Antonio quartet met while the majority
of the group was attending Trinity University (also home to the Butthole Surfers). Their vocally rich sound was conceived during vocalist Erik Sanden's two year stint of recording and releasing a song a week through his phone line, 210-PET-ABLE. After playing together for 15 years in different incarnations (Evergreen, the Unables) Buttercup have the musical equivalent of a great marriage that never lost its lust for self discovery, creativity and spontaneity. Their sound is fresh and original, their chops are seasoned and their live shows are works of art. "Buttercup's goal is to make high quality music, flirt with its inevitable delivery, bringing together diverse groups of talented people. We pledge to never falter in this quest for musical quality, if we should we promise to wear our clothes inside out for a whole year. On this you have our word." - Erik Sanden and Buttercup In 2007 Buttercup will release three P's over a six-month period and combine them with new songs for a full length releasein the fall. Discography: Sick Yellow Flower 2005 Hot Love 2006 The Cup in the Media: "Hot Love" was chosen as the NPR song of the day in June 06 @ www.npr.org "..the songs on Hot Love...stand on their own as eccentric pop gems. With a '60s-style AM-radio beat and Sanden's airy delivery, the track conjures an alternate universe where Ray Davies and David Byrne collaborate on jangly pop songs with unexpected twists in the shade of the Alamo." --David Brown, KUT FM, Austin TX "Their sound has grandiosity and still water quiet...Like the Flaming Lips and Polyphonic Spree, they have a musical inclination toward something huger, an intimation of something bigger than themselves and, most importantly, a desire to have a kissing point with the audience. It’s romance." -- Amplifier Magazine |
