Tania Bowers has been writing and performing as a musician since her ealry teens. She cut her musical teeth in Australia as part of the vowel-free monikered Spdfgh, an all-girl indie-pop outfit she formed with her sister Kim.
Specialising in a unique brand of noisy pop, the band charmed Australia from end to end, playing shows with almost every big time indie band to visit Australia including The Breeders and Bikini Kill, and signing their first record deal before completing their final year at school. Eventually ending up on a major, after a few line up changes and a great deal of pressure to change their music into something more palatable to mainstream tastes, the fun stopped, and Spdfgh decided to call it a day. Tania turned towards music that was introspective. Realising some of the songs she was writing were, at times, introverted, Tania began to make music for music's sake. Around this time she met her husband-to-be, Chicago based producer Casey Rice, who has worked with many bands both in the studio and on the road, including Liz Phair, and Tortoise. The pair relocated to Chicago for the following four years. In that time Tania met an all-star cast of Chicago musicians, each dedicated to their art and willing to collaborate and share talents. Under Casey and Tanias careful production guidance Under A Different Sky includes collaborations with Prefuse-73 on "I Dream Again" and "Lightning & Thunder", John Herndon and Doug McCombs of Tortoise, Howe Gelb of Giant Sand, and Chris Brokaw. Released on Chocolate Industries in the US, the album was met with great critical acclaim and college airplay, making it a top 3 CMJ College Radio record. In support of the album Tania played shows with the likes of Tortoise, Cat Power, Edith Frost and Joan of Arc. The follow-up to 'Different Sky' has been a long and winding path of musical adventures. In late 2004 Tania travelled to Chicago, New York, London, Paris, Moulis, Reykjavik and Tokyo and along the way she recorded parts with many musically inclined friends. 2005 saw Tania head back over to the US to Chicago, where she built half a dozen new songs from scratch, working with dear pals from the area at home and at a couple of other studios. After a short respite back in Australia early in the year, Tania headed back over to the US. While she was in Melbourne, however, US producer Craig Ross (Shearwater, Patti Griffin, Spoon, Red House Painters) caught her live set. Tania and Craig have completed the album, entitled 'Moon Sweet Moon' together in Austin, Texas. While Tania explores various release options with labels, she has begun touring regularly again with a new band, having performed shows recently with My Brightest Diamond, Junior Boys and Lisa Germano. |
