Pattern is Movement

Pattern Is Movement lured Hometapes at first listen - simultaneous repetition and unpredictability made for something akin to our simultaneous obsession with The Camberwell Now and school marching band music. Complex polyrhythms are set to a hip-hop backbeat, concocting a wild brand of math rock that you don't need a degree to understand. A complicated rush of well-played instruments and hypnotic vocals keep a straight narrative, making songs that listen like short dreams you curse for ending too soon. Think Blonde Redhead and This Heat. Half punk rock, half scholarly, Pattern Is Movement's attention to detail makes for rhythmically impeccable music that rocks f'ing hard.
In 2005, the Philadelphia band worked with engineer and producer Scott Solter (Spoon, Mountain Goats, Tarentel, Two Gallants, John Vanderslice, etc.) on their album "Stowaway." In 2006, the band handed the tapes back to Solter to do with them what he pleased. The architect became the destroyer as tape machines were booby-trapped, analog gear harassed, and wire recorders sent spinning. The original sounds (the only source material) were undermined - and exalted - by the very devices that brought them to life in the first place. "Stowaway" was dismantled. "Canonic" was born. Pattern is Movement is in the midst of an extensive three-month US tour on which they've played alongside the likes of Metal Hears, Victory at Sea, Decibully, Headlights, John Vanderslice, Cinemechanica, Thunderbirds Are Now!, etc. They toured earlier in 2006 with Annie Clark (of the Polyphonic Spree) and are touring in early Spring 2007 with David Bazan. Look for their new album on Hometapes in early 2008. |
