Paul Duncan

Hometapes began in 2003 with Paul Duncan, a Texan now in Brooklyn on the cusp of his third album. His second album, "Be Careful What You Call Home," conjured critical acclaim last Fall and continues to do so all over the world.
Paul's music has something current about it; he began as one man composing in a homemade studio in an age where that is common and applauded (rightly so or otherwise). Though, his unique combination of traditional, almost country-oriented instruments (guitar, pedal steel, drums, banjo, strings, glockenspiel, piano, etc.), synthesis and noise, and his tight hold on language and feeling create tricky pop songs and musical descriptions of memories. This is the stuff of something entirely new. His upcoming album (currently untitled and release date TBA) was boldly created out-of-house with engineer Tim Iseler at Soma EMS in Chicago. He had a little help from a whole pile of good people: Adam Wills (Rhys Chatham's Essentialist, Bear In Heaven) Christopher Bear (Grizzly Bear) David Daniell (San Agustin, Rhys Chatham's Essentialist) Doug McCombs (Tortoise, Brokeback) Fred Lonberg-Holm (Terminal 4, Lightbox Orchestra) Joe Stickney (Rhys Chatham's Essentialist, Bear in Heaven) Josh Berman (Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra) Ken Champion (Jim O'Rourke) Nate Lepine (Cursive, Smog) Nate Swanson Tim Daisy (The Vandermark 5) In addition to his own music, Paul is cultivating a presence as an engineer/producer in his own studio. He plays live with Jonathan Kane and recently recorded Kane's new EP on Table of the Elements. He's currently at work on a live CD release on the Antiopic label featuring Oren Ambarchi, Alan Licht and Tetuzi Akiyama. Friend a collaborator David Daniell has Paul at work on his new record, also to be released on Antiopic. In addition, Paul will appear on (and is doing some engineering on) Bear in Heaven's upcoming record (their last was on Eastern Developments). |
