Helene
Helene met Graham at university in London and quickly formed a musical alliance which would see them through a number of guises, and a number of band members, up until the formation of Helene, the eponymously titled band - so named to tip a cap to the overriding influence and sensibility of their offbeat, Syd Barrett-as-a-girl lead singer and songwriter. Helene's peripatetic, topsy-turvy upbringing, and ensuing life experience, has lent her a unique insight into a world which remains hidden and alien to most, and gives her oddbod romantic lyricism full reign on the band's latest album, the Simon Raymonde-produced 'Routines'. This glorious album runs the gamut from the mundanity of mental illness to the sublime elusivity of love. Like Nancy Sinatra slumming it with the Velvet Underground, the ghost of Serge Gainsbourg looking lasciviously on.....Helene's at once delicate and robust delivery somehow makes it easier to make it through the night.
'the greatest lyricist in England's green and pleasant land' - Simon Raymonde (ex-Cocteau Twins, head of Bella Union Records) 'these kids sure know how to turn on the dark light' - Kurt Heasley, Lilys. |
