BloodHag

BldHag is a four-piece death metal act from Seattle, Washington whose very short songs illuminate the lives of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror authors. Throughout their eight-year career, they have received unconditional support from the Kids as well as unexpected support from librarians, who, for once, stopped shushing and embraced the unholy racket.
In 1999, BldHag's dreams came true when they were offered a show at the downtown branch of the Seattle library by Jeff Katz, the Youth Programs Director at the time. Word of BldHags unique take on rock and literature spread to other librarians when Katz attended the Regional Conference of Youth Librarians with BldHag CD in hand. Soon, more offers for shows flooded in, the best of which became a seven-date library tour that was filmed for a documentary. BldHag has gone on to play library shows all around the US, and the band has since been credited by the King County Library System as fitting the criteria for a literacy program. BldHags tour documentary premiered at the SXSW Film Fest in 2001, and went on to win the Audience Award for best short at the San Francisco Independent Documentary Film Festival. It was chosen by the Young Adult Library Services Association as one of their top DVDs and Videos for Young Adults for 2003. It still continues to play across the country, and has been shown on various PBS stations most notably in Bellevue, Boston and Chicago. A library show in Bellevue, WA was the subject of an excellent and entertaining NPR Weekend Edition report. Locally, BldHag has also been featured in the Seattle Times, Seattle Weekly, The Stranger and The Rocket. The band has been featured nationally on the Associated Press Newswire, Library Journal, American Libraries Magazine, San Francisco Bay Guardian, Thrasher Magazine, etc. Internationally, BldHag has been the subject of stories on BBC 4 radio, Canadian AP Newswire, and the Guardian UK. In 2005, BldHag released a book/CD project with author Thomas M. Disch titled Mecca/Mettle published by Payseur & Schmidt. In May 2006, BldHag released their latest album Hell Bent for Letters (Virus 357) on Alternative Tentacles, a 27-year-old punk label based in San Francisco, CA, owned by Jello Biafra, spoken word artist, political activist, and the former lead singer of the Dead Kennedys. |
