1001 Nights Orchestra is Austin’s longest running Middle Eastern music group. Founded by Kamran Hooshmand on oud, santour and vocals, it includes Ken Maranian on clarinet, Don Weeda on accordion, and Lauren DeAlbert & Anne Alexander on percussion. They received a Best of Austin Award for the score to the 1924 silent movie, “Thief of Bagdad," and their CD “Music from the Middle East & Beyond” topped the Austin Chronicle’s Top 10 list.
