Witnes
Genre: DJ Hometown: Houston TX
www.myspace.com/witnes
As an event promoter, dj and field marketing rep for Universal, Witnes has kept all of Down South’s underground nightlife bases covered for eleven solid years. A team-oriented player, Wit (a.k.a. Michael Zapata) was honored “Best DJ of 2006” by the Houston Press for his “skills on the ones and twos and ability to keep a steady scene at The Proletariat's ‘Rock Box’ every Thursday,” while the weekly was underlined “the best time you’ll have all month,” by Spin Magazine. “Rock Box” fuses hip hop bravado with hipster grit and proves that Wit’s coordination of the art direction, sponsorship and talent booking—Tittsworth, Oxy Cottontail, Debbie of Avenue D and Adam 12 (of She Wants Revenge) have performed—is more than a one trick act. Marketing tie-ins with American Apparel (for “Rock Box’s” Panty Party), Red Bull and Adio-Skate, along with a successful four year run on KPFT’s “Late Nite Snax” radio show also solidified his status as a name to watch. “I come from a hip hop background, but what some people don’t understand is that a dj who can fuse different genres of music and keep the party live, is hip hop no matter what” Wit says. Party goers and marketers can expect the freshest beats from Wit’s unique sets, which include everything dance-worthy from funk-infused soul to bubblegum 80s, electro and classic hip hop. If South by Southwest, De La Soul and Oxy Cottontail can see it, there’s no doubt that others will too.
