Gary Lucas

Guitarist extraordinaire/songwriter/composer Gary Lucas has been performing his live solo guitar original soundtrack to accompany screenings of the 1920 German expressionist silent film The Golem since 1989, when he debuted his project at the Next Wave Festival in NYC. Since then he's gone on to perform with the film in over 18 countries around the world, including shows at London's Royal Festival Hall, at the Venice Biennale, and in Prague, home of the Golem. The film concerns the actual historical Rabbi Jehudah Loew of 16th century Pragye who legend has it fashioned a man out of clay and brought him to life to protect the Jewish community from annihilation. Former Captain Beefheart and Jeff Buckley guitarist Lucas' live score is a spooky psychedelic headtrip combining atmospheric drones, ancient liturgical music, folk, blues, jazz, classical and avant-rock elements to provide a seamless accompaniment to this classic of fantastic cinema. He recently performed with The Golem in the old church Eglise St. Jean Baptiste opening Pop Montreal before an audience of 1000 folks, which was named a highlight of that festival in the Montreal Gazette. Gary also leads his longtime avant-punk band Gods and Monsters who have a new album out, "Coming Clean", on Mighty Quinn which has garnered 4 star reviews in MOJO and Uncut and a rave in Rolling Stone.
