Ana Egge

Ana Egge captures the intoxicating spark of passion in "Straight To My Head," the first single from her stunning 2005 release,
Out Past The Lights (Grace/ParkinSong; Ryko Distribution). This album marks the end of Ana's own vanishing act of sorts. With three breathtaking albums under her belt, and having shared spotlights opening shows for Shawn Colvin, Richard Thompson, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Jane Siberry, George Jones and more, Ana has opted for a low profile in the past. Not these days. The daughter of a school teacher and a wheat farmer, Ana grew up in a small North Dakota town of 50 people. During the long winter months, her family would pile into an old converted school bus and travel to warmer climates down the coast to California and New Mexico. Perhaps it was this nomadic reverie that laid the foundation for Anas independent spirit and eclectic musicianship later in life. The idea of drawing from her diverse surroundings and making something from seemingly nothing was always natural to Ana. Known for building her own guitar, she later built herself a house in the New Mexico desert outside of Silver City. Then, leaving her beloved white truck and motorcycle behind, she pulled up stakes for the relative anonymity of Brooklyn. In the three years since then, Ana has played elite New York clubs while impressing a dazzling array of musicians, including self-professed fans Lucinda Williams, David Crosby, Loudon Wainwright III and Buddy Miller. Among her following is also Out Past the Lights co-producer and bassist Jason Mercer who, for years, provided the anchor of Ani DiFranco's band. Together, Egge and Mercer have crafted a rare gem. Billboard Magazine calls Out Past The Lights, "a breakout collection," explaining that "while she could easily play the folk card with her acoustic guitar-crafted songs, Egge takes them to a new level, with instrumental flavors and textures from country (pedal steel), jazz (trumpet) and pop (electric guitar)." The Austin Chronicle attests by saying, "Egge isn't mired by the singer-songwriter assignation; the musical and melodic textures are rich and varied Gillian Welch produced by Robyn Hitchcock rather than the other way around." In short, Ana Egge is truly a post-modern troubadour..blurring state lines and musical styles without asecond thought. Her travels have taken her from the plains of North Dakota to the desert of New Mexico, from the stages of Austin to New York City. Along the way, she has developed a knowing sense of the world and a sultry honey-tinged voice that belie her 30 years. Ana defies the typical singer-songwriter mold and continues to build a legacy, one mile and one song at a time, that promises to live on.. out past the lights. |
