The Budos Band
|

True, Staten Island--perhaps best known for the Godfather movies, the Wu Tang Clan and the distinct accents of its residents--is often deemed the prodigal stepchild of New York Citys five sibling boroughs. The Shaolin however has always been a hotbed of underground music talent, having birthed raw acts such as the Wu, New York Dolls and Force MDs. Now you can add to the list the Budos Band, a ten-piece riot of juicy horns, frenzied drums, psychedelic organ and thick guitars that whip afrobeat, latin and funk ingredients into a uniquely danceable mess. Part of the burgeoning stable of Brooklyns Daptone Records (Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, the Sugarman Three), the Budos, for the first time, bring their instrumental rough and tumble, symphonic madness to SXSW.
Comprised of a bunch of tight-knit twenty-somethings, the musical core of the Budos have been honing their chops together a long time, having met many years ago as part of a local community centers after-school jazz program. Here, they not only discovered jazz, but also the infectious music of folks like James Brown, Fela Kuti and Mulatu Astatke. Hence, they soon started their own band, Los Barbudos (Spanish for the bearded ones), a name soon trimmed to the Budos Band after one of the boys shaved. Years of honing their craft finally paid off as 2005 bore witness to their debut full-length release, The Budos Band, which has garnered critical praise from around the globe. Global Rhythm Magazine described the album as funky boogaloo breakdowns that sound like outtakes from one of the funkiest blacksploitation soundtracks never made; while Treblezine proclaimed it the perfect party record that if you can't shake your ass toyou might as well just turn in your cheeks daddy-o! So dont snooze. Come see what the excitement is all about and get your injection of outer-borough funk. |
